The Autumn Defense
Tonight in Fall River, The Autumn Defense will appear at the Narrows Center. The band, which started as a side project for Wilco members John Stirratt and Pat Sansone, is known for its engaging pop rock harmonies. They released their fifth album, titled Fifth, last week, to considerable critical praise. Area favorite The Bob Kendall Band opens the show at 8PM. Tickets are $25 in advance, $28 at the door. Rock at The Spot
Another option tonight will be at The Spot in Providence where several band converge for a show organized by Golocal.com’s Rob DuGuay. Party to the disco-rock sounds of Connecticut’s The Guru, enjoy the funk rock of Northeast Traffic, groove to Boston’sDave Crespo’s After Party and meet eccentric singer-songwriter Andrew Spatz. Tickets are $12 for the 9PM show.
Also tonight, Lupo’s in Providence hosts the well known jam band, Umphrey’s McGee. Although a part of the jam band scene, the group is known for its progressive rock style, influenced by bands like King Crimson, Yes, and Pink Floyd. It’s an 8PM start with Kung Fu opening, Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door.
Roots Music at Manchester 65
Roots music continues to thrive nationally and in Rhode Island. Tomorrow night, head to Manchester 65 in West Warwick for "Your Roots are Showing," a evening of music featuring a number of area acts. Highway's End, Mardi Garcia & the Asteral Seekers, Herb Anthony, Pinata Diplomacy, Kait Clavette, Silvah Dali, and Patrick Simus will be performing. Show starts at 8PM. Tickets are $10 for the 18+ event.
Martha Redbone Roots Project
Finally, be sure to make some room on your schedule for the Martha Redbone Roots Project next Thursday Feb 13 at Aurora (former Roots Café) in downtown Providence. Redbone is in town as part of program of Firstworks, an arts advocacy agency based in Providence. She’s appearing at several local schools before the evening concert. Her latest album, The Garden of Love, a tribute to the poems of William Blake, has been widely recognized as a masterpiece of roots music.
